Meet Finn.

Finnian Ayres is an 18-year-old Bachelor of Architecture student currently in his second level at RMIT. Born in Michigan and raised in Victoria, Finn became interested in Architecture from watching his brother work as a landscape Architect, finally choosing to pursue his interest after completing Visual Communication Design in High School.

Finn is interested in the how architecture is able to provide a sense of legacy for ideas and people. To be able to look at an individual building and piece together the philosophy and logic behind its design. Then to be able to look at a city (especially Melbourne) and see how different ideas from groups of people throughout history are reflected back the architecture they leave behind. Being part of this conversation across time is the essential element which drives his interest in studying Architecture.

Some of his favourite Architects currently include Frank Lloyd Wright, Walter Gropius, Antoni Gaudi and Carlo Scarpa.

Finn’s other interests and hobbies include tennis, soccer and rock climbing along with an avid attraction to twentieth century history and geopolitics. Enjoying music a listener and player, Finn can play the bass saxophone, violin and flute though to vastly varied levels of competence. Some of his recommend favour bands and artists to recommend are Beach House, Rodriguez, Arctic Monkeys and Daniel Johnston. While some of his favourite television series would include Stargate, Westworld, Black Mirror, Fringe and the Twilight Zone.

Regarding Libraries, Finn sees that while the world becomes faster and faster as we become more reliant on the digital and online realm, libraries in some ways ‘almost paradoxically’ are becoming more important. Acting as anchors of truth by providing a sense of physicality and trust through expertly curated source that the digital equivalent, an environment filled with ‘fake news’ and unchecked facts could never provide.
